"At Mid Distance" is a ptoto documentary focusing on the Japanese-Brazilian
'haafu' models, whose different appearance - once associated with immigration,
social exclution and cheap labor - has connoted them an image of success
and acceptance. This image challenges established ethnic conceptions and,
through the hands of industry and media, helps building a transnational
Japanese identity.
「ミッド・ディスタンス」は日本人とブラジル人のハーフのモデルに焦点をあてたフォト・ドキュメンタリーである。
典型的な日本人とは異なる彼女たちの容姿は、かつて移民、社会からの排斥や安い労働力を連想させたのとは違い、成功と受容というイメージを喚起させる。
彼女たちのイメージは確立された民族概念に対抗するものであり、業界とメディアの手を借り、国を超えた日本人のアイデンティティーを作り出すのに役立っている。
ヒカルド・ヤマモト
ブラジル人で東京在住のフリーランス・フォトグラファー。1991年に来日したのち、自動車やエレクトロニクスの工場に15年勤める。2001年からブラジル人コミュニティーの生活模様を写真に収めている。
